August 31, 2001
A team of roughly a dozen officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Marshals, along with deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department arrived at the residence of a twice-convicted felon, warrant suspect. The suspect was wanted for impersonating an officer and for possession of illegal firearms.

The suspect refused to come out of the house and opened fire on the officers with an automatic weapon. Deputy Kuredjian, a motorcycle officer (60M2) and a 17 year veteran of the Los Angles County Sheriff's department responded to the assistance call, shots fired request. Upon arrival Deputy Kuredjian stopped four doors east of the suspect's location and ducked for cover behind a nearby car. Deputy Kuredjian was fatally shot by the suspect from the second floor of his home using a high powered, scoped rifle. The suspect then held other officers at bay for several hours. The suspect died after tear gas canisters ignited the house causing it to become a fiery tomb and burn to the ground.
